It is getting near that time again. Each year we vow to be more prepared but there is always something that catches us out. The biggest problem is normally trying to think of original presents to buy your nearest and dearest. We have all heard the usual “it’s just what I always wanted” with the eyes saying something entirely different. So to buy something for young children that is going to hold their interest for more than five minutes, can be a real problem and one faced by many parents at this time of year.

Chocolate manufacturers have perfected a gift idea in the shape of a chocolate Hanukkah gelt. To give a child some of these with some real coins could be the start of a child’s financial education and the concept could be extremely beneficial to any child.

Hanukkah gelt as a gift, is an ancient custom dating back to the 18th century and at that time was given as a token of gratitude to religious teachers. It was not until 1920 that a gelt was produced out of chocolate, wrapped in gold or silver foil and placed into a small money pouch.

In parts of Europe, the St Nicholas celebrations were celebrated by giving children chocolate coins called a geld. This is thought of as the inspiration that prompted the chocolate manufacturers to produce the chocolate Hanukkah gelt.

Originally, the source of the manufacture of chocolate Hanukkah gelts was restricted to Israel but they are now beginning to be produced in the United States too.

There are not many children who do not like chocolate and if encouraged to keep the foil that the Hanukkah gelt is molded in, it could act as a constant reminder of its history and sentimentality of who gave them the gift.

The Tradition of Wearing a Knitted Kippot

Most experts are of the view that wearing a kippot is more of a tradition although is seems to have taken on the force of a law. They further state that that Bible and the Talmud makes no mention about it and therefore local customs have been freely developed, and interrupted during various periods in history. Many others however argue that wearing the kippot is universally accepted and is now accepted and regarded as a defacto law. Accordingly, although there is no official requirement to wear a head covering during prayers, since the customs has become widely accepted, that anyone who goes about without a kippot was not pious.

At first, only men used to wear the kippot but later on even women developed the habit and married Jewish women are anyway required by law to keep their heads covered even under normal circumstances. Apart from tradition, the kippot has now become a fashion symbol with many Jewish women and sometime even non-Jewish women who liked the look of it adopted the kippot as a fashion accessory and started wearing the knitted kippot. Those who have learnt the knack of crocheting and knitting mostly do it by themselves in colors and designs of their choice with Jewish symbols being among the more popular patterns selected.

A very popular design for the knit kippot is the Star of David which most fond mothers who knows knitting, knit for their sons for their bar mitzvah. A knitted kippot is also considered a suitable gift to be given by loved ones to one’s friends children at their own bar mitzvah’s which are accepted with sincere appreciation because there could never be enough kippots to be worn for the many religious and other occasions that takes place in the Jewish community.

About The Hanukkah Menorah

The Hanukkah Menorah, as we all know, is a candle holder. Specifically, it is a candelabrum with eight branches. It is used during the eight days of Chanukah. The ninth spot on holds the Shamash, which is the one candle used to light all of the others.

Chanukah is a celebration of when the Israelites rededicated the Temple after revolting in opposition to the Seleucid dominion. The Israelites couldn’t find enough oil to light the Temple’s menorah for more than a single day, but it miraculously stayed lit until more oil could be found, eight days later. This is why Chanukah is referred to as the Festival of Lights

The menorah found in the temple would have had seven, as opposed to eight branches. Apart from the symbolic meaning of the eight branches, indicating the miracle of the eight days, it is also possible that the number of branches do not match because the sanctity of the Temple would not allow exact copies to be made.

There are also references to the story of Hannah and her sons. The story is told in the Talmud, that Hannah had seven sons who were forced before an idol to do worship at the time of Antiochus. They refused to do obeisance to the idol and were tortured and killed. Upon learning of the execution of her sons, Hannah killed herself.

Then after I make that I'm going to make a, what is it, a music video. Meaning like a song playing and a skate character and some friends singing it, so yeah. Cause I've always wanted to do this cause those are like so awesome. But anyway, I'm just going to go, maybe. No I'm just joking.

Lately I'm been getting a lot of hate mails. That why I came to hate Christmas. Oh no I'm sorry I do hate Christmas. We welcome November with the anticipation for all the yum thanksgiving recipes. the topically Thanksgiving recipe includes some craisins or as some may call it Dried Cranberries and some pecans. Some love to make pecan pie. so here is a Pecan pie with Jumbo Raw Georgia Pecans.

Crust:
1 ¼ cup flour
1 tbsp. cornmeal
½ cup butter, cut in cubes
½ tsp. salt
3-4 tbsp. water
4-5 tbsp. extra flour
Place flour, cornmeal, butter and salt in a food processor. Mix for about 1-2 minutes, until a sand-like mixture forms. Slowly add water until the mix forms a ball of dough. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for half an hour.
Preheat oven to 375°. Roll dough into an 11-inch round on a floured surface. Place dough into a 9-inch pie tin. Use your fingers to have the dough fit firmly into the pan. Use either a fork or your fingers to make a decorative edge. Prick dough with a fork and line the dough-filled pie pan with aluminum foil.
Fill the lined pan with dried bean or pie weights. Bake for 8-10 minutes, then remove foil and beans/pie weights and bake uncovered for another 8-10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Filling:
1 ¼ cup of pecans
1 cup dark corn syrup
¼ cup white sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup butter
¼ tsp. salt
½ tsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. vanilla extract
3 eggs
Mix all of the above ingredients together with a whisk until well blended. Add 1 ¼ cups of pecans.
Place filling into baked pie crust. Place in the oven for 1 hour. Remove and cool completely before serving. Add a dollop of whipped cream is desired. Serves 6-8.

So we are after Passover. Now its time to get ready for summer , we are all getting ready send our kids to sleepover camp. Mr. Silber's, team, has earned a reputation as the most maniacal pack of rabbis, high school principals and pen importers in the Borscht Belt.

Despite the league’s name, its game is softball. It has 40 teams playing Sunday mornings in July and August.

On a recent Sunday, Cheim Silber, whose nickname is wolf, was pacing behind the home plate at Monticello High School as one of his more reliable hitters, Mr. Dachs, stepped to the plate his kippah on his head and flexed his muscles.

On a mild evening, in the Henry Crown Auditorium in the Jerusalem was engulfed in melodies of Europe. all Arrayed in finest evening dress - the men in tuxedos, the women are in sleek black gowns - the musicians of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra ventured into the realms of Odin and Thor, of Vikings and Valkyries. The program, entitled Northern Lights and the latest of the JSO's Musical Discoveries Series, focused on works of the little known composers Sibelius, Nielsen and Berwald.

Behind the musicians' unflappable demeanor, as they concentrated on their playing, is the sure knowledge that unless funds are acquired soon to compensate for a 60 percent budget cut, Northern Lights signified a cold end to an orchestra just shy of its 70th birthday and closed.

The choice of obscure composers was deliberate. "These are different pieces," says principal bassoonist Richard Paley. "Only we do things like this." Paley and his colleagues explain that rather than focusing their energies on popular pieces like Beethoven's Fifth, the JSO has considered it its mission to introduce lesser known pieces to the Israeli public and more.

A radio orchestra, the JSO is broadcast over Israel and on about 250 stations in the United States. The JSO is the only orchestra to focus on contemporary pieces by Israeli composers - many of whose work would not be played otherwise at all, let alone gain international exposure via the radio.

"Without us there would be no library of Israeli music," concludes Paley.

Gershon Dembinsky, head of the Musician's Committee and a clarinetist for the JSO, believes that as a state subsidized entity, a radio orchestra has a responsibility to represent artists' creativity than rather popular preferences. "A radio orchestra has a special identity in any country… it's not dependent on the tastes of the public; it should represent the creativity of artists bringing out new pieces… [and] should be more daring, go into contemporary music, be colorful," he says.

The JSO's programming may work to its detriment, admits Paley. "If people aren't familiar with the names, they're afraid to take a chance on something we can give them," he told In Jerusalem.

Paley describes the Scandinavian works of last week's performance as "big, beefy, romantic music" that echo the tradition of popular romantic composers such as Strauss, Mahler and Wagner.

Players in the JSO range from young fledglings to musicians who have been with the orchestra for decades. Many are Russian immigrants, while others hail from places such as Romania, Germany, South Africa, the Czech Republic, the United States and Israel. A handful of the older players wear kippot, interspersed among them are seductively dressed female players.

The Northern Lights concert has been conducted by Timothy Myers, 31, a guest conductor from New York who had only a week to become acquainted with the orchestra and the repertoire.

Gilbert and Lillian Zinn of Spring Valley talk about their January visit to a unique group: the Abayudaya Jews of rural Uganda.
After visiting Jewish groups across the county and introduce people to the Abayudaya through a slide show.
Their love for Judaism is deep and obvious, and they understand the beauty of the religious tradition that many American Jews take for granted much of the time.

The audience saw that love of tradition in pictures of community life. In addition to photographs of workers tending their tea cooperative - most of them are subsistence farmers - they saw the small, concrete block house that hosts the Jewish school that also serves Christian and Muslim children. They saw an Abayudaya wedding with jordan almonds , the couple standing under a wedding canopy. They saw people in a synagogue Sabbath and others celebrating Purim holiday . And they saw another image of small children - one of them wore a skullcap, called a kippah or yarmulke - standing in the entrance to a small, brick home. A mezuza, a piece of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah, graced the doorway.

Kulanu is taking small groups, most recently the group including the Zinns, to visit the Abayudaya for five years.

Not only are the trips a chance to interact with the Abayudaya, but $700 of each person's tour fees goes directly to funding Abayudaya development projects, Wetzler said.

Zeller, the Kulanu president, said much of his organization's work is done by volunteers who are not compensated but who believe in Kulanu's mission of finding and aiding all Jews in need.

"The idea of Jews being connected to Jews all over the world, sight unseen, is a very old idea," Zeller said, "and it's really what makes non-Jews look at us and scratch their head, oftentimes really not just in amazement but in admiration.

"We believe there's tremendous virtue in Jewish networking. We think this is a very important, old virtue. It's part of our peoplehood. Judaism is both a theology and a peoplehood, and this is the exercising of our peoplehood."

When the Zinns' presentation ended, several people crowded around the table where Abayudaya music CDs and handmade kippot were on display. Sales of items would benefit the Abayudaya.

Elizabeth Ekstein of New City found the presentation enlightening.

"I was amazed, totally amazed, that they would take the Bible so literally … and following the rituals, which we don't do here," she said. "Most of us are Jewish because we were born Jewish, but these people chose it."

One big difference between the two congregations is that at the Conservative synagogue all men and boys are expected to wear a kippah (yarmulka) or other head covering whenever they’re in the building. At the Reform temple, wearing kippot is optional.

The Coast Guard and kippot

Mr. Rosenberg, a 34-year-old tire technician and a certified pilot from Spring Valley, N.Y., signed up for the Coast Guard Auxiliary last year, hoping to fly on rescue missions and the like.

He underwent a full military background check. He had several sets of fingerprints taken.passed the boating test and the written course.

"But as soon as I got sworn in and got ready to put on the uniform," Mr. Rosenberg said, "the commander came to me and said it's going to be a problem."

The problem was on top of Mr. Rosenberg's head. He is a Hasidic Jew, and he wears a kippot at all times except when showering or swimming. The skullcap clashed with the uniform.

Wearing a visible piece of religious garb violates Coast Guard regulations. It says so in the Coast Guard manual, right between "Umbrellas" ("Plain black or navy blue, expandable, straight handle. Must be carried in left hand.") and "Backpacks" ("Must be carried in left hand when in uniform"). "Religious Items," the manual says. "Concealed or worn only during religious services."

Mr. Rosenberg's main skullcap, a black velvet model, is about six inches across. On occasions when Coast Guard protocol calls for wearing the official cap, including most outdoor activities, it would conceal the skullcap.

But indoors, auxiliarists are not supposed to wear their caps. (They are also told not to wear them while walking to a plane at an airport; a blast of prop wash could lead to the undignified sight of an auxiliarist chasing his bounding cap across the tarmac.)

If Mr. Rosenberg had joined the Army, things might be different. Since 1987, in response to a lawsuit, the armed services have let members wear skullcaps, head scarves, and other religious garments "except under circumstances in which an item is not neat and conservative or its wearing shall interfere with the performance of the member's military duties."

Other organizations have dealt with similar controversies. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has eased its restrictions even as it fights a federal suit involving bus drivers who were not allowed to wear their Muslim head scarves.

But the Coast Guard does not answer to the Department of Defense, or to the transportation authority for that matter. It is under the Department of Homeland Security, and it has its own regulations.

Mr. Rosenberg said his flotilla commander, Arthur Ramirez, of the auxiliary unit based in Lincoln Park., N.J., tried to accommodate him.

"Is it possible," Commander Ramirez asked in an e-mail message, "that you could wear a 'miniature' yarmulke, small enough to be concealed by your hair?"

It would have to be very small indeed. Mr. Rosenberg is bald on top.

Commander Ramirez referred the matter to his supervisors, to no avail.

Things looked grim. Mr. Rosenberg's smart blue dress uniform hung unworn in a closet in his home in Rockland County. He was not about to compromise on the skullcap, which Orthodox Jews commonly wear to remind them of God's position above humankind.

"If my religion requires it," Mr. Rosenberg said, "there's not a choice."

A relative referred Mr. Rosenberg to a state assemblyman in Brooklyn, Dov Hikind, who has many Orthodox constituents. Mr. Hikind wrote on March 7 to the commandant of the Coast Guard, reminding him that a homeland security expert at the University of Maryland had recently called the Coast Guard "vastly understaffed and underresourced" and that turning away a willing volunteer might not be a good idea.

The commandant has not responded. But as it turns out, the Coast Guard's uniform board has its annual meeting this week in Washington.

One item up for discussion is whether to relax the restrictions on religious accessories to bring them in line with armed forces policy. The policy chief for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Steve Minutolo, said he expected a change.

"I'd be striving to align as closely as possible with our D.O.D. counterparts," he said, adding that he had not heard of Mr. Rosenberg's case and that the proposal had been in the works long before Mr. Hikind's letter.

So it now looks as if Mr. Rosenberg may be able to take his uniform out of the closet after all. As long as he keeps his beard less than half an inch long, that is.

Or at least, as long as it looks as if he does.

"Do you know how long my beard is?" Mr. Rosenberg asked. He reached under his chin, undid a hidden black rubber band, and pulled and teased and pulled and teased until two long locks of hair flowed down from his chin to his navel.

"You just have to keep it up," he said.

Recently there have been a lot of complaints of foul play and violence.Officials at the Maccabi Southern Football League admit that incidents of scuffles between players and dissent towards referees has become an increasing problem during games.But they believe that the proposed “Knock it on the Head” scheme, which will require all MSFL players to wear official kippot or face fines and suspensions, will inspire teams to treat opponents in a more considerate manner.Maccabi GB’s Stuart Lustigman said: “Too often we have received complaints from referees about player behaviour and the time has come for something had to be done.“We don’t expect this to be popular with all our players but we really feel this will help return the league to its founding principle of promoting strong Jewish values among our young people.”Following a trial match on Sunday afternoon between London Maccabi Lions A and Marshside and Glenthorne, league chiefs are set to vote on whether to introduce the scheme at the annual general meeting in June.Lustigman said: “First of all, we wanted to see how the players would react to the idea. But we’re also trying to decide whether to go with a traditional skullcap, held on by hairclips, or a more sporty number attached to a waterproof chin strap.”Lions joint-manager Ben Winston, whose team ran out 3-0 winners, said: “I’ll be honest, there were mixed reactions from the players but the game was certainly played in a great spirit and if anything the kippot improved our play. At times it felt like there was a twelfth man out there.”
