Others, like Steven and Jennifer and their daughter Sasha, live on Nantucket year round, and were welcomed into the island’s close-knit Jewish community.
Jennifer, who grew up on Nantucket, converted to Judaism in 1999 while the couple was living in Maryland.
“The Jewish religion made a lot more sense to me,” she said. The was a big sense of history and a sense of overcoming struggles. Learning the history of the faith as an adult helped facilitate a better understanding,
Steven, grew up in a large congregation in Peabody, Mass.
Hanukkah, when I was growing up, was not really a temple-based holiday, he said. It’s more like Thanksgiving, he said – a family tradition. like giving hanukkah baskets
to him what it represents is, if you stand up for your right to worship, and believe as you choose, God will support that. The couple welcomes the opportunity to introduce Sasha to the traditions of the holiday, and Judaism in general.
